The course will explore the variety of voices contributing to the tapestry of Orthodox theology of the 20th and 21st centuries. After a historical and thematic introduction it will be mainly based on the reading and interpreting of texts, starting with the Russian emigrés such as Berdyaev, Bulgakov, Florovsky, Lossky, Schmemann, Mother Maria (Skobtsova), as well as looking at Greek, Romanian and Lebanese contexts and that of the Western converts to Orthodoxy. The actual theological themes studied through the texts cover theology of creation, theological anthropology, there especially questions of freedom and determination, christology, soteriology, doctrine of deification, ecclesiology, angelology, spiritual life and iconography.
