The course offers a close reading of Silence, the novel by the Japanese writer Shusaku Endo. Reading through the text the course will consider the implications of what Endo writes and the story he tells for considering Christian mission, both its possibilities and the dangers it faces. It will examine questions of inculturation, of the role of ministry in mission, of what to do when mission appears not to succeed, and it will examine what it means to be faithful and what is and what is not martyrdom.
