This course introduces hermeneutics as the theory and practice of interpretation across texts, traditions, and cultural contexts. It traces the development of interpretive approaches from early hermeneutics through the practices of the Early Church, including allegory and typology, and into medieval and modern perspectives. Students explore fundamental issues such as the nature of texts, language, signs, symbols, and metaphor, gaining tools for understanding how meaning is constructed and communicated. Students develop critical, reflective, and context-sensitive skills for engaging diverse forms of cultural and religious expression.
